Spaceshop

Spaceshop, in its enigmatic splendor, stands as a metaphor for the city itself

In the vibrant core of Copenhagen’s Møntergade, a place known as Spaceshop stands as a time capsule of the 1970s. Here, a series of shops, once echoing with silence from prolonged vacancy, now whisper tales of a bygone era.

On an evening stroll, I chanced upon a peculiar scene – a lone figure, almost phantom-like, maneuvering amidst relics of old telephones and computers.

This bizarre, artistically charged tableau unfolded before my eyes, painting a picture of a world both familiar and alien.

This photograph, which rapidly ascended to become a signature piece and a favorite among many, is no mere coincidence. It encapsulates something profoundly novel and unseen, an element of otherworldliness that haunts the familiar streets of Copenhagen.

»Surface«, »Counterparts«, »Togetherness«, »Change«, »Presence«, »Uncovered« and »Dignity«: these were the major thematic exhibitions that HELLERAU – European Center for the Arts organized together with Kunstagentur Dresden in recent years.

Dresden, famous pioneer city of photography. And nearby: Hellerau, Germany’s first garden city. The Festspielhaus Hellerau has been perched on Dresden’s “Green Hill” for over 100 years. Since 2015, it has been hosting the PORTRAITS – Hellerau Photography Award.

Here, photographers from all over the world apply, translating the themes of our time into portraits. Their works are shown in the Festspielhaus and, since 2017, at other extraordinary locations across the Saxon capital: in small galleries, abandoned industrial buildings, in studios, museums and off-spaces.

Over the past four years, we have presented more than three hundred photographers from more than forty countries in 30 different exhibitions.
