At the heart of Copenhagen Municipality’s transformative vision for Bispebjerg Bakke lies a profound belief in art as a catalyst for community, identity, and connection. From 2022 to 2026, the neighborhood is being reimagined as a vibrant, green, and inclusive space, where history, architecture, and daily life coexist with new possibilities. Art is not just an accessory to this renewal; it is the very essence of its transformation.
Public spaces, by their nature, are arenas of shared experience, where people of all backgrounds, ages, and statuses intersect. The film “Why Art?” explores how art in these spaces becomes a silent yet powerful force, fostering spontaneous encounters with creativity and deepening our understanding of self and place.
My role as documentary filmmaker of this film project was to bring the different roles and perspectives into play in a narrative and visual way.
Through non-verbal storytelling, it invites viewers to reframe familiar moments, uncover hidden narratives, and witness the quiet yet profound ways art shapes our daily lives.
Collaborating with local artist duo Hesselholdt & Mejlvang, the film weaves intimate insights from residents into a cohesive narrative, culminating in a striking final performance that ties the story together. Simultaneously, the Art Patrol (Kunstpatruljen) initiative was launched to uncover overlooked artworks in Bispebjerg Bakke and introduce new artistic expressions into the landscape.
By embedding art into the fabric of public life, the project aims to strengthen community bonds, enrich quality of life, and ensure that Bispebjerg Bakke evolves not just as a place to live, but as a living, breathing testament to the power of creativity.
